Securing a Therapeutic Franchise

Challenge: GlaxoSmithKline was faced with increasing competition in asthma management which was a significant therapeutic franchise for the company

Strategic Approach: Developed an educational-based campaign to improve resources that primary care and pediatric care practices can employ for managing asthma. The GlaxoSmithKline Respiratory Institute empowered primary care and pediatric practices to become local experts in asthma management. Project Spirometry provided access to office-based spirometry by loaning spirometers to practices. Spirometry provides a clinically objective measure of respiratory function and its use has been demonstrated to significantly lower the risks of asthma-related complications such as emergency department visits and hospitalizations. Training was facilitated by nurse educators who instructed practice staff on the use of this modality, which previously was only available with a referral to a hospital-based pulmonologist
